I can’t pretend that my reaction towards the Odessa massacre of May 2 doesn’t come from the heart. Odessa–it’s the city outside of England I love more than anywhere else.
I lived in Kiev from 2010 until early 2013, with a couple of lengthy breaks back in the UK in that time. I liked Kiev, but never loved it. Who I did love was my girlfriend of that time, Ira, and after our relationship ended in early 2013, myself then back in the UK for 6 months, I understood that I’d like to go back to Ukraine, but couldn’t go back to Kiev.
So, I chose Odessa, a city I’d been in early 2012 to do a piece for What’s On magazine at which I was working at that time. I’d liked Odessa, but living there from mid-July 2013, it quickly turned to love. I gushed on this blog about Odessa like a teenage fan of One Direction:
